Montgomery to Biloxi September 12th
I left my accommodation this morning and discovered it was more a hostel for the homeless than a hotel. I wondered why all the cars looked bashed and battered and on their last legs. It was well kept though and good value for money IF ONE IGNORED THE SURROUNDINGS.
Leaving Montgomery and heading for route 65 I encountered the funniest of experiences at the very busy intersection. On the pavement by the lights was a skinny little guy with a straggly long beard and a hat that I can only describe as a Snap Crackle and Pop hat (rice krispies), floppy made from the stars and stripes. He had a look of 'The Devil' that is often seen on the Tour De France. He had very baggy shorts and incredibly spindly legs and from the pavement he was strutting his stuff whilst (in his head) directing the busy traffic. He was making exaggerated hand movements waving the traffic on and pointing at individual cars. He had his trolley with all his worldly possessions in it. The moves were funny enough as they comically mimicked the policemen here who do stand in the road directing traffic. But as I looked up the road there had been a crash - obviously caused - by this fellas HILARIOUS antics. It was difficult to take ones' eyes off him. As I was about to take my filtered turn two police cars arrived and this off his face guy proceeded to martial the police in the direction of the incident - as if to say thank God reinforcements have arrived, AND ABOUT TIME TO, how do you expect me to manage this lot all on my own!
I hope the officers dealt with him fairly, he was clearly not all there. I couldn't stop laughing for about 5 minutes.
An uneventful ride to Biloxi but I passed some interesting places - one being Murderers Creek, there were lots of For Sale signs about, funny that!! I decided today that my new maxim is to only drive 70 miles before i have a stop - its fun because you never know what kind of place you turn up at. Today's stop took me down a little backwater just off the motorway, below are a few pictures - yes someone was living in that house - the picture actually flatters it!
My bike and visor is covered with these mites, funny looking things as they appear to have two heads. The border between Alabama and Mississippi is very swampy, so there are lots of bugs. At one stage I went through a swarm and the noise of them hitting the flyscreen and my visor was a little sickening. They also leave a yellowy goo on everything!!
So I have arrived in Biloxi and as Jen as already spotted on the tracker I am by the sea. Actually i'm about 7 miles from the sea but it looks close on such a large scale map. I will take a ride down there shortly to see if I can see Cornwall.
See Cornwall? Now even my geography knows there is land in the way!!!
