September 16th Saltillo
A very boring day, having decided to have a day off from the bike. I awoke late from my slumbers with housekeeping entering my room, unfortunately the housekeeper was a small Mexican male! My stuff was all over the place with washing being hung up to dry, petrol canisters, cooking stuff (right way up) and various detritus. When i see it like this i wonder how it all fits on the bike.
I slowly packed things up, tidied me up and headed down to get some money from the bank across the road - if the ATM would let me. Yesterday it had refused and I spent much of yesterday evening sorting this out with my bank and significant others (Jen). The lobby was packed and the adjoining area also - I'd forgotten that there was breakfast with this hotel. I reasoned I'd go and get money and then get breakfast and the queues will have died down. At the ATM I was successful and pleased with myself the I had mastered this as it was all in Spanish - however and there always seems to be an however these days, I'd messed up on the zeros in doing my conversation from pesos to pounds. Instead of £300 I'd taken out £30 - which wouldn't take me far!
Back in the hotel the queues for breakfast were worse and I just managed to get the last available table. Drinks, cereal, hot food all had crowds around them; impatiently I just grabbed two sweet sticky things and a glass of orange. I decided to take a walk into the town, maybe look at the cathedral. I spoke to the security man outside the entrance (his English is better than any of the receptionist) and he told me it was not far and gave me rudimentary directions. I walked in the direction he'd said, passed a Mercado, a Mexican Walmart and decided to pop in, walking around I decided to pop back to the hotel and use the wifi to get a Google map of the centre - save me getting lost. The doorman looked at me strangely, back so soon he must have thought, I laughed and thought I'd explain on my way out for a third time. He was right it was only a few miles away, but I'd lost the appetite to go now.
The next thing I knew I was awakening from a very deep sleep and it was 4pm. I must have been very tired and when I looked out of the window it was raining and in the distance I could hear thunder and see lightening. I think this is going to be a feature for the next month or so, rain in the afternoons. I decided to use the rest of the day formulating a plan. In communicating with Joseph in Costa Rica he affirmed this is the wet season and apparently this year, at least in Costa Rica is especially bad, roads washed away and bridges down!!
I have a week before I meet up with Tas in Guadalajara, so in doing some research I found a place away from the cities (which I've decided are not for me) called Copper Canyon it is meant to be beautiful and in a place called Creel there is a campsite. There is also a large indigenous population of peoples called the Raramuri. It is a 2 day ride up there and kind of going back on myself, but i think it will be more interesting than this large metropolis. Unfortunately I will have to stay in two towns before i get there. I figure 2 days up, two days there and 2 days back.
After that I shall head out of Mexico and into Guatamala and anticipate difficulties on this border. I think I may have skipped a process in getting into Mexico, reading other peoples experiences they filled in temporary import of vehicle documents which they showed upon exit. I did not know this but will meet that bridge when I come to it.

Looking forward to getting on the bike and being away from this place, somewhere quieter and less busy.
Worth reading a book called Born To Run, about the Tarajuma people of the Copper Canyon area. Sounds like a wonderful place.
