San Pedro to Antofagasta

November 5th San Pedro to Antofagasta

Dirty and dusty San Pedro de Atacama, dirt roads and basic buildings

View from my bedroom window

I left early, even though the check-in at my hotel was not until 3pm. No point in hanging around, I'd seen all I wanted to see in San Pedro. I figured sitting by the sea was a better way to fill my time.
The journey was very uneventful and though I was travelling through desert this was the flat monotonous type. Mile after mile of straight fast roads, with nothing that particularly stood out. I amused myself by trying to translate any road signs that I passed. I did not fill up with fuel in San Pedro as the next town Calama was only 50 miles away. I followed the main road expecting to see a filling station, but there were none. I had to turn around and head into the town to get fuel (fortunately Tinks has a good database of petrol stations, with directions). The petrol stations seem not to be found on the main highway, in fact the only petrol station in San Pedro was virtually hidden inside a hotel complex.

With a big day tomorrow (325 miles) I will ensure my tank is full before departure.

I arrived at the hotel at 1.30pm and was made to wait until 3pm before being shown to my room, one consolation was that the hotel had a a small kitchen area with comlimentary tea, coffee and biscuits. I passed my time eating biscuits and drinking tea, while checking the football scores back home. I find the mentality of sticking rigidly to the rules, quite tiresome and I really don't understand the pysche of people who adhere strictly to some given.

Ensconced in my hotel and with my washing all done and drying in the wind, these small frustrations soon diminish.
