October 1st Quezaltenancha
The last time I felt like I did last night was on arrival in Mexico over two week's ago. After a a good nights sleep and a lazy day I felt more positive and in daylight Quezaltenancha was reasonably attractive. I had a lovely breakfast and they gave me a pot of tea (bliss) though they don't get the cold milk thing with tea. The hotel manager kindly photo copied my documentation (3 lots of everything - God knows why) and entered the address of the nearest ATM into my phone.
storm clouds a brewing
It was nice riding the bike in the dry and without all the luggage - it was even fun avoiding pot holes. I entered the main road and just as last night it was busy with vehicles. I found the bank and joined the long queue outside. It is a feature of banks here, a security guard manages the numbers inside, frisks you and shoulders an automatic rifle. Having got to the front and eventually inside, there was no sight of an ATM just another queue to the teller. I waited patiently and as I was expecting, she could not give me the money and directed me to the ATM outside. I walked outside to where she had pointed, but couldn't see any ATM. Looking more closely, I knew it must be around somewhere as there was another armed guard hovering. To my astonishment, I was right in the centre of it, a drive in ATM with carport and machine. I got my money, although the max was only £100, I looked up and saw I had walked to the front of the queue and behind was a whole line of cars! Bloody English.
I then went on an explore around the city and everywhere was so so busy with traffic and people. There was a real buzz to the place and some interesting buildings. In my exploration I lost orientation and spent a good hour driving in circles - which I figured was a good way of describing sightseeing. As is always the case one does manage to find one's way back.
My quiet road with a classic public bus and pickup with passengers
Back at the hotel I started finalising tomorrow's destination. I hope I don't live to regret this, but I plan a border crossing into El Salvador, along 220 miles of dodgy slow roads, this is going to be pushing it. I'm banking on there not being so many lorries on a Sunday and that the border crossing being quieter with it being a Sunday. I'm heading to La Libertad, which I hope is a good omen. It will give me a 200 mile trip the next day into Honduras and the following day Nicaragua - that's the plan anyway.
*Foot note
Quezaltenancha is approximately 3000 metres high, making the temperature very pleasant.
It's 4.45 here and it's started to rain - anytime from 3pm onwards seems to be rain time .
Tomorrow I'll put on my wet weather gear to coincide with these times - don't want to get cold again
